Because there was a before and after Koetsu, we invite you to join us for three sessions of talks dedicated to phono cartridges.
Three sessions are open to you upon reservation:
- Friday, September 19 at 7 p.m. — an evening around a shared meal
- Saturday, September 20 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Let’s now dive into the heart of the matter. The vinyl record gradually became a mass-consumption medium. At the very beginning, cartridge choices were limited to a few major brands — to name only the most renowned: Ortofon, EMT, Denon, Audio Technica, Shure. But during the 1970s, vinyl became democratized, and we witnessed a true boom in the industry.
All major Hi-Fi brands of the time offered their own models of turntables and proprietary cartridges, often developed in OEM by the aforementioned cartridge manufacturers, even though we also saw genuine original creations from JVC/Victor and Sony. It was also the moment when innovative companies such as Excel Sound, Jico, and… Supex emerged in Japan.
It was precisely at Supex that Yoshiaki Sugano worked before founding Koetsu, a company that continued to thrive long after Supex’s bankruptcy. Together, we will reflect on the reasons behind Koetsu’s enduring legacy, the fascination it still inspires worldwide, and how this new approach paved the way for a whole new generation of cartridge manufacturers.
To accompany this talk, we will put you in a listening situation with a selection of cartridges representative of this evolution.
Feel free to bring along your own cartridges, records, drinks, and food to share. As on every Saturday, an informal lunch is planned, along with an afternoon snack featuring pastries by Benoît Castel.
We look forward to welcoming you — especially if you have registered in advance by simply sending an email to: info@anamightysound.com.
⚠️ Please note: seats are limited!
